On behalf of myself and the Arizona Women’s
Curling Team, I would like to thank all the members of our Club
for their support in our journey to the Women’s National Club
Playdowns in
Mankato
,
MN
, March 1-8, 2008.
Our journey began in January in
Seattle
when we won the right to represent MoPac (Mountain Pacific region)
at the Club Nationals. The
feeling was euphoric for all of us.
Mankato
is a small College town in
Minnesota
and the Curling Club was formed in 1903, a mere century before
ours Club!
We arrived on Saturday afternoon to a temperature of about
15 degrees and drove 75 miles to
Mankato
where we had a scheduled two hour practice that night.
The ice was wonderful – no Zamboni runs or hills and
valleys!
First game was not until Sunday night, so lots of down time
to develop hitters. Then
we played against an amazing team from
Wisconsin
. Headed up by skip,
Joy Pahl, with her 13 year old daughter, Chloe, and 15 year old
teammates, Erin Wallace and Kimberly Rhyme.
Watch for those names at future Olympic trials!
We didn’t have a chance against this team of curling
machines.
Our second game was against the Minnesota Team who were the
eventual winners of the Club Nationals.
Two of the members of this team have been to Olympic Trials
and all had been to Club Nationals previously. We were beaten
handily, but they were a lovely team of women.
In fact, we didn’t play any team that wasn’t friendly
and amazing to play.
Then came our third game against
Ohio
and we finally had a chance at a win or at least staying in the
game until the end. We
were up 6-2 and then gave up a 7-ender, but recovered to win in
the 10th with a 4 ender.
We were finally able to celebrate.
The next three games were hard fought tough losses.
We met
New York
on Thursday morning and this game came down to a draw to the
button by us and a last rock miss by NY to give us the 10-9 win.
Once more, euphoria set in.
All in all, this was a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed the Playdowns.
Now I am going to sleep for a week!
My team is awesome – thanks Carol Ann, Theresa, Gwen and
Kelly.
